Kolkata. IPS Sidhnath Gupta will continue to hold the post of Director General of Police of West Bengal until April 2027. The government has extended his tenure by another six months. His tenure was to end on October 31. Before that, the central government wrote a letter to the state government headquarters informing them that this 1992-batch IPS officer will remain the DG for the next six months. After the announcement of the assembly election dates in West Bengal, the Election Commission had appointed him to the post of DG. The then DG Piyush Pandey was removed from his post. According to sources, DG Sidhnath Gupta was scheduled to retire on April 30, 2026. However, due to the imposition of the Model Code of Conduct for the assembly elections in the state, the Union Home Ministry had extended his tenure by another six months. That tenure was to end on October 31, 2026. Even before that, the decision to extend his service tenure has been made. He will remain at the top post of the state police till April 2027.
The Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet has issued a notification stating that the Union Home Ministry had proposed to extend Sidhnath Gupta's tenure. The Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet has approved that proposal. The notification stated that this decision has been taken in public interest under the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958. Speculation had already begun as to who would be the next DG of the state police after Sidhnath Gupta's retirement. The Centre had asked the state government for names of officers to choose a new DG. Similarly, the state headquarters Nabanna had also sent the names of some IPS officers to Delhi. But for now, the Centre has decided to halt that process and extend Sidhnath Gupta's tenure by another six months.
