Durgapur: Durgapur East MLA Chandrashekhar Banerjee claimed that the Medha Muni Ashram, located inside the Garh Jungle of Kanksa block, will be developed and included among the country's prominent religious sites. The state government will soon approve this project. Mythological tales and stories of goddess worship are associated with it. Folklore regarding King Surath and Goddess Durga's worship is linked to this place. Local belief holds that Durga worship began here in ancient times. Due to that tradition, many people still visit Medha Muni's ashram during Durga Puja. The world's first Durga Puja took place here. The name Chanditham is associated with the old tradition of Durga Puja. Surrounded by Sal, Teak, and Mahua trees is Medha Muni's ashram, also known locally as Garh Chanditham. According to folklore and mythology, King Surath of Balipur (now Supur) in Birbhum district lost his kingdom in war and came to Medha Muni's ashram in the forest along the Ajay River (now Garh Jungle) to perform penance. After about three years of rigorous penance, King Surath got his kingdom back. Following Medha Muni's advice, King Surath worshipped Goddess Durga in the spring season. Based on that belief, this place is considered the origin of Durga Puja. Due to the blend of history, mythology, and local beliefs, Chandi Dham in Garh Jungle remains a special center of attraction today. Many memories of mythological stories are still fresh around this ashram. There was a time when not many people came here due to fear of wild animal attacks. But now the picture has changed overnight. Crowds flock here during all four days of worship. Paving of the Garh Jungle road has further increased the crowd levels. A permanent temple has been built. Yogi Brahmanandi said that Durga Puja started from here. King Surath first worshipped Goddess Durga here in the spring season. Even today, sadhus worship Goddess Durga according to the tradition here. Only a few days are left for Durgotsav. Preparations to welcome Uma are underway.
