Bankura. Police have arrested Trinamool Congress leader Ajit Mahato on charges of defrauding Rs 10 lakh by luring a person with the promise of a permanent government job in the forest department. He was arrested late Thursday night and produced in the district court on Friday. The incident began a few days ago when Sajal Das, a resident of Bachurdoba area in Jhargram, filed a complaint against Ajit Mahato. According to his allegations, Ajit Mahato used his political influence and close proximity to high-ranking state government officials to assure him of permanent employment in the forest department. The complainant paid a total of Rs 10 lakh to the accused in four installments between December 2024 and March 2026. However, even after a long time, Sajal did not get the job. When he demanded his money back, it was of no use, and the complainant claimed that the accused threatened to kill him and demanded an additional Rs 2 lakh. Furthermore, the complainant stated that Ajit had similarly cheated many unemployed youths by luring them with government jobs and extorted money from them. Investigating the matter, Jhargram police arrested the accused Ajit Mahato from his residence on Thursday night. A police official said they are investigating who else is involved in this fraud.
