Dhanbad: Two researchers from IIT-ISM will conduct research in Japan. Although their research drafts are different, the goal is the same—to find solutions to major problems through science and technology. One researcher will use mathematical modeling to understand the spread of infectious diseases like cholera and develop better prevention strategies, while the other will use artificial intelligence to teach robots to identify the material of an object. From healthcare to waste management, these studies hold many future possibilities. The researchers of IIT-ISM Dhanbad have got the opportunity to do research at the international level. Dheeraj Kumar Srivastava, a PhD scholar from the Department of Mathematics and Computing, and another researcher Vishwajeet are working on new possibilities in their respective fields of expertise. In Japan, they will get the opportunity to work with advanced research facilities, technology, and experts. Their effort is that the Indian research community should also benefit from the experience and knowledge gained there. Dheeraj Kumar Srivastava is a third-year PhD researcher at IIT-ISM Dhanbad. Under the guidance of Professor R.K. Upadhyay, he is working on mathematical modeling of infectious diseases. During his one-year research program at Kyushu University in Japan, his focus will be on understanding the spread of diseases like cholera and the role of human behavior in controlling them. According to Dheeraj, just developing a medicine or vaccine is not enough to control a disease; it is also necessary to understand how aware people are about getting vaccinated, using clean water, and adopting hygiene. All these aspects can be analyzed through mathematical models and available data. This study can help in understanding how a better coordination of government policies, vaccination, public awareness, and resource spending can be helpful in disease prevention.
